The field of gender studies in Italy has been strongly influenced by Italian feminist theory of the 1970s and 1980s and is still strongly marked by an essentialism that leaves the male/female dichotomy largely unquestioned. For decades, Italian gender studies have not embraced intersectionality to any significant extent, and when they have, they have not applied this methodology to the Italian context.

hey phillyheads and Temple students! there will be two really great events held on campus this week, and since i’m thousands of miles away and unable to attend, you should all go on my behalf! if you’re into liberation, female empowerment, and left wing politics you won’t want to miss them.

first, Peta Lindsay, the vice presidential candidate for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, will be speaking in Tuttleman 5B tomorrow at 7pm. i didn’t know this until just now but she went to high school in Philly and was really active in the Philadelphia Student Union!

then on Friday Temple Students for Justice in Palestine will be hosting a Dissent in America teach-in titled “Palestinian Women Speak Out.” several Palestinian American women will be speaking about their recent experiences in Occupied Palestine. I know all of the speakers personally and they’re all total badasses! so don’t miss it. :)

so has the liberal first world feminist blogosphere (feministing, jezebel, etc) covered Hana Al Shalabi at all? just curious, i did a quick google search and i didn’t see anything.
